Success is in the Follow-up!

Follow Up

Many potential job leads and key referrals are lost because of a lack of follow up in job search networking!

Job seekers know they are supposed to network with others to find their next job. Unfortunately, by effectively doing only “drive-by” networking, most real opportunities are lost.

When people have a networking conversation or meeting, they can’t often think of appropriate opportunities or referrals on the spot. They may have 1 or 2 ideas to share, but then the conversation often runs dry.

It’s not unusual that something comes to mind, or they come across a lead or person that may be worthwhile a day, a week, or a month later. It’s relatively rare though, that they will take the initiative to reach out and convey the information.

If, however, they receive an email, a note or a call as a follow up, they generally are more than happy to relay the info.

It’s not that they were holding back, rather they often lose the contact information, figure the leads aren’t needed any more, or simply procrastinate and the best of intentions falls by the wayside.

A Thank You email or note, a periodic update on the job search, a call or voicemail to once again show appreciation for their time and consideration generally can generate more leads and referrals than the original conversation or meeting.

Successful networking is about building relationships, not simply having one time conversations with as many people as possible.

Take the time to send a note, make a call, or otherwise follow up with every connection you make. With each contact, be sure to share your contact information again so that they have it handy. You will find your results improve dramatically!
